Requirements for obtaining a license

To obtain professional license (A1 to A5)
Be at least 20 years old.

This course should contemplate the use of full immersion simulators or other equivalent technology that resembles real driving conditions. The characteristics and technical specifications of these simulators will be established in a regulation of the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications.

For A3 or A5 licenses, they must also pass the theoretical examination corresponding to the type of professional license to which they are applying in the respective Municipality.

The course for drivers who aspire to an A3 or A5 license must be accredited by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, which requires the regulation, the duration of the course and the minimum theoretical and practical contents that the course program must take into account. including a minimum and maximum hours of driving and practice on the simulator.

  • For non-professional leave

Class B
Being over 18, exceptionally 17 years old.
Be graduated in basic education.
Class C
Be over 18 years old.
Be graduated in basic education.

  • For special licenses

Class D
Be over 18 years old.
Literacy.
Believe knowledge and practice in handling the vehicles or special machines in question.

Class e
Be at least 18 years of age.
Literacy. Anyone who passes a special exam can be exempt from this requirement.

Class f

Be at least 18 years old.
Approve the respective institutional courses.

License types

There are three main classifications:

Professionals

  • Class A1:to drive taxis.
  • Class A2:driving taxis, ambulances or motorized vehicles for public and private transportation of people with a capacity of 10 to 17 passengers, not counting the driver, or up to 32 seats, provided that they have this license for at least two years and provided that the length of the vehicle do not exceed nine meters.
  • Class A3:For taxis, student transport vehicles, ambulances or vehicles for public and private transport of people, without limitation of capacity.
  • Class A4:for transporting cargo whose gross weight exceeds 3,500 kg.
  • Class A5:to drive cargo vehicles, single or articulated, with a gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg.

Non-professionals

  • Class B: for three or four-wheel motor vehicles, for the private transport of people with a capacity of up to 9 seats or loads whose vehicle weight is up to 3,500 kg. They can also tow a trailer whose weight does not exceed that of the propulsion unit and whose combined weight does not exceed 3,500 kilograms. Example: cars, trucks, vans, vans.
  • Class C: for 2 or 3 wheel vehicles with fixed or added engine. Example: motorcycles, scooters.

Specials

  • Class D:for automotive machinery, such as tractors, mechanical shovels and others.
  • Class E:vehicles pulled by animals.
  • Class F:to drive motorized vehicles of the Armed Forces, Police and Fire.

Driver’s license cost

In addition to the cost of photographs, municipalities generally charge:

  • Class B: 0.51 UTM
  • Class A: 0.36 UTM

Driving license validity period

  • Non-professional licenses (B and C) have a duration of 6 years.
  • Professional licenses have a duration of 4 years.
  • Special licenses have a duration of 6 years.

However, these periods may be restricted for special reasons, such as wearing glasses and others.

The driving license is obtained at the transit address of the municipalities qualified to take the exam.
