The maternity suspension allowance in Guatemala is a payment made by the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) to affiliated mothers to help with expenses before and after childbirth. Maternity leave is taken for a total of 84 days. Below are the requirements for IGSS maternity enrollment.

What is maternity leave?

It is a right contemplated in the legislation of almost all countries on the continent and It consists of a period of paid leave enjoyed by future mothers during the last days of pregnancy and the first days after delivery.

During this period, working mothers may be absent from work and receive a remuneration of 100% of the salary.

The maternity leave time in Guatemala is 84 days divided into a prenatal and postnatal period as follows:

  • Prenatal period: 30 days before the estimated due date.
  • Postnatal period: 54 days after delivery.

If the baby is born before the date, during the prenatal period, the days are transferred and added to the 54 days after delivery.

Then, you can return to work or equivalent in pay and that is related to skills, ability and competence.

Maternity registration requirements

To perform the IGSS registration for maternity, the following requirements must be met:

  • They contributed in 3 months, in the 6 months before the beginning of pre and post-natal rest. Affiliates registered after August 5, 2005 must have contributed 4 months.
  • Present the IGSS membership card.
  • Work certificate with 3 months prior to the month of pre and post-natal vacation. For registered affiliates after August 5, 2005, they must have contributed 4 months.
  • Personal Identification Document (DPI) that is presented at the bank when the grant is collected.
  • Representative mandate, in case the affiliate is unable to physically collect your payment.

In the case of being a State worker, the Salary Cut Report must be registered issued by the employer at the time of pre and post-natal rest.

The IGSS recognizes 100% of the daily salary to the affiliate due to temporary maternity disability during 84 days of rest. These are divided into 30 days before delivery and 54 days after delivery. This allowance is also paid for unintended abortion 100% of the affiliate’s daily salary, for the suspension period, which is a maximum of 27 days.

The right to benefit from maternity and suspension benefits will depend on the fulfillment of the effective rest affiliated worker, who must abstain from any paid activity upon receipt of maternity allowance.

Documents for maternity record

The documents for maternity registration in Guatemala are as follows:

  • Personal Identification Document (DPI), required by the Bank, when the subsidy is collected.
  • Mandate with representation, in the event that the affiliate is physically unable to receive its payment, required by the Bank, at the time of collection of the subsidy.
  • When the case of spontaneous or therapeutic abortion occurs, a subsidy is granted up to a maximum period of 27 days from the date of the abortion, provided that temporary disability is declared.
  • Wage Cut Report, in the case of State Workers, issued by your Employer at the time of pre and post-natal care.

  • Rate mortuary.

For Mother

  • Medical Care for Diseases in the Department of Guatemala.
  • Maternity Medical Assistance, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met
  • Medical Accident Assistance.
  • Hospitalization for Illness, in the department of Guatemala
  • Maternity Hospitalization, provided that the conditions described in the Regulation are met.
  • Hospitalization by accident.
  • Emergency medical care.
  • Rehabilitation, provided the conditions described in the Regulation are met.
  • Orthopedic and Prosthetic Devices, provided the conditions described in the Regulation are met.
  • Dental care.
  • Radiological, laboratory tests and other necessary supplements.
  • Survival pension, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met
  • Mortgage Rate, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met

How long do the IGSS benefits last?

Maternity benefits from the Social Security Institute of Guatemala (IGSS) last until the child turns 7, except the survivor’s pension and the mortgage.

When should I register for IGSS?

As explained in the requirements to improve the process, it is necessary to have contributed in 3 months, within the 6 months prior to the beginning of prenatal and postnatal rest. It is important to remember that as of August 5, 2005, you must have 4 months of contribution.
